Panic And Anxiety

What can I do to control my panic/anxiety attacks?
I have had panic attacks since I was little, but recently they have been getting worse. Stepping way from a stressful situation no longer works and even a cool damp towel on my forehead and neck doesn’t work either. We don’t have a bathtub so my husband is afraid to put me in the shower alone when I feel that way. Is there any homeopathic way I can help control my panic attacks? Please let me know.
I can’t afford therapy.
therapy. it really does help.

Ambulance Girl $13.95 Five years ago Jane Stern was a walking encyclopedia of panic attacks, depression, and hypochondria. Her marriage of more than thirty years was suffering, and she was virtually immobilized by fear and anxiety. As the daughter of parents who both died before she was thirty, Stern was terrified of illness and death, and despite the fact that her acclaimed career as a food and travel writer required her to spend a great deal of time on airplanes, she suffered from a persistent fear of flying and severe claustrophobia. But a strange thing happened one day on a plane that was grounded at the Minneapolis airport for six horrible, foodless, airless hours. A young man on a trip with his classmates suddenly became dizzy and pale because he hadn’t eaten in many hours, and there was no food left on the plane. Without thinking about it, Jane gave him the candy bar that she had in her purse. A short time later the color had returned to his cheeks, the boy was laughing again with his friends, and Jane realized that this one small act of kindness–helping another person who was suffering–had provided her with comfort and a sense of well-being. It was shortly thereafter that this fifty-two-year-old writer decided to become an emergency medical technician, eventually coming to be known as Ambulance Girl. Stern tells her story with great humor and poignancy, creating a wonderful portrait of a middle-aged, Woody Allen-ish woman who was deeply and neurotically terrified of sick and dead people, but who went out into the world to save other people’s lives as a way of saving her own. Her story begins with the boot camp of EMT training: 140 hours at the hands of a dour ex-marine who took delight inpresenting a veritable parade of amputations, hideous deformities, and gross disasters. Jane–overweight and badly out of shape–had to surmount physical challenges like carrying a 250-pound man seated in a chair down a dark flight of stairs. After class she did rounds in the emergency ro |

Anxiety Disorders in Adults: A Clinical Guide $3.47 Each of the adult anxiety disorders (panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder) is presented in a separate chapter of this volume. As the rich description of each disorder is aprerequisite for their recognition, understanding and diagnosis, the book focuses on clinical features, psychopathology and the corresponding conceptual issues. There is also an emphasis of etiological factors, pathogenetic processes, and pharmacological and psychological treatments of each anxietydisorder, as adequate treatment depends crucially on the clinician’s understanding of the origins of these conditions and the processes involved in their occurrence. The volume is guided by a practical need to present the anxiety disorders as they occur and as they are treated in the real world. As such, this work is intended to be a state-of-the-art reference for clinical practice, aiming to balance and integrate what is currently known about anxietydisorders and their treatment. It contains descriptions of the relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, practical tips, and treatment recommendations for the commonly encountered clinical situations. Anxiety Disorders in Adults: An Evidence-Based Approach to Psychological Treatment $40.05 Recently developed psychosocial treatments for anxiety disorders reflect the systematic influence of scientifically generated knowledge, and these new treatments yield strong results. Research in such areas as information processing, cognition, behavioral avoidance, and the physiologicalcomponents of anxious arousal has increased our knowledge of mediators that cause and maintain anxiety disorders. The development of these new clinical tools is timely, as epidemiological studies now show that up to 25% of people will experience at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Meanwhile, mental health care providers are increasingly pressured to limit the number of sessions and use demonstrablyeffective treatments. In this book, the authors review psychosocial treatments for anxiety disorders, focusing on the scientific basis and demonstrated outcomes of the treatments. Cognitive behavioral therapies are highlighted, as they have been the most frequently investigated approaches to treating anxiety disorders.Individual chapters feature specific phobias: social phobia, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. The book is rich in clinical material and integrates science and clinical practice in an effort to help practitioners to improve the effectiveness of their work with anxious clients. |

Fear $5.51 Fear — the word, itself, conjures the appropriate response. With a dark cacophony of associations like fright, dread, horror, panic, alarm, anxiety, and terror, fear is universally understood as one of the most basic and powerful of human emotions, obtaining a nearly palpable and overwhelming substance in today’s world. In this remarkable, groundbreaking book, acclaimed historian Joanna Bourke covers the landscape of fear over the past two hundred years: From the 19th century dread of being buried alive — a subject dear to the heart of Edgar Allen Poe — to the current worry over being able to die when one chooses; from the diagnoses of phobias and anxieties produced by psychotherapists and lovingly catalogued to the role of popular culture and media in inciting panic and dread; from the horrors of the nuclear age to the cold fear of 21st century terrorism. Fear tells the compelling story of anguish in modern times. A blend of social and cultural history with psychology, philosophy, and popular science, this astonishing book — exhaustively researched and beautifully written — offers strikingly original insights into the mind and worldview of the long twentieth century from one of the most brilliant scholars of our time. |

Food, Morals and Meaning: The Pleasure and Anxiety of Eating $160 Food, Morals and Meaning traces our complex relationship with food and eating and our preoccupation with diet, self-discipline and food guilt. Using our current fascination with health and nutrition, it explores why our appetite for food pleasures makes us feel anxious. This second edition includes an examination of how our current obsession with body size, especially fatness, drives a national and international panic about the obesity epidemic. Focussing on how our food anxieties have stemmed from social, political and religious problems in Western history, Food Morals and Meaning looks at: – the ancient Greeks’ preoccupation with eating – early Christianity and the conflict between the pleasures of the flesh and spirituality – scientific developments in 18th and 19th Century Europe and our current knowledge of food – the social organization of food in the modern home, based on real interviews – the obesity epidemic and its association with moral degeneration Based on the work of Michel Foucault, this original book explains how a rationalization food choice – so apparent in current programmes on nutrition and health – can be traced through a genealogy of historical social imperatives and moral panics. Food, Morals and Meaning is essential reading for those studying nutrition, public health, sociology of health and illness and sociology of the body. |

Insidious Foes: The Axis Fifth Column and the American Home Front $116.09 In this book, Francis MacDonnell examines the origins and consequences of America’s Fifth Column panic and its manifestations in political and cultural life. He argues that conviction and expedience encouraged President Roosevelt, the FBI, Congressmen, Churchill’s government, and Hollywood to legitimate and exacerbate Americans’ fears. Gravely weakening the isolationists, fostering Congress’s role in rooting out Un-American activities, and instigating the creation of the modern intelligence establishment, the Fifth Column scare did far more than sell movie tickets, comic books, and pulp fiction. Insidious Foes traces the panic from its foundation, as reasonable Americans saw the vulnerability of their open society to encroaching totalitarianism. Probing the intersections between domestic politics, popular culture, and foreign policy, MacDonnell provides a glimpse of a crucial moment in the history of American anxiety. |

Moral Panic and the Politics of Anxiety $58.95 Moral Panic and the Politics of Anxiety is a collection of original essays written by some of the world ‘’s leading social scientists. It seeks to provide unique insight into the importance of moral panic as a routine feature of everyday life, whilst also developing an integrated framework for moral panic research by widening the scope of scholarship in the area. Many of the key twenty-first century contributions to moral panic theory have moved beyond the parameters of the sociology of deviance to consider the importance of moral panic for identity formation, national security, industrial risk, and character formation. Reflecting this growth, the book brings together recognized moral panic researchers with prominent scholars in moral regulation, social problems, cultural fear, and health risks, allowing for a more careful and critical discussion around the cultural and political significance of moral panic to emerge. This book will prove valuable reading for both undergraduate and postgraduate students on courses such as politics and the media, regulatory policy, the body and identity, theory and political sociology, and sociology of culture. |
